Elixir of Life
A liquid made from the philosophers stone that has the power to make a wizard or witch live-forever, as long as they keep drinking it

Engorgement Charm
A spell that causes things to grow larger. (Opposite Deflation Draft) To engorge is to fill to excess.

Engorgio
Spell to make things bigger

Ennervate
A spell used to revive someone

Evanesco
A charm used by Bill Weasley to make a bunch of scrolls disappear evanescent, means fleeting or tending to vanish like vapour. From the Latin entis-e, to vanish and nanus, empty

Expecto Patronum
Defence against Dementors. From the Latin words ex, out and specere, to look, Patronus means protector or father, so expecto patronum means to look out for a protector.

Expelliarmus
A disarming spell, From the Latin combination, Expella to expel, and arma, weapon.

Expellimellius
Cho's variant of Expelliarmus that makes her friend's sleeve catch fire

Extinguishing Spell
A spell to put out fires

Ferula
A spell to make a splint for a broken bone, Ferule is a wooden stick that can be used as a splint, it is also an instrument, such as a flat piece of wood or cane, used to punish children.

Hair-Raising Potion
Something that includes rat-tails as an ingredient.

Hair-Thickening Charm
Something that could conceivably cause someone's eyebrows to get huge.

Homorphus Charm
Either forces a werewolf not to change or changes a werewolf back to human. Supposedly used by Gilderoy Lockhart on the Wagga Wagga Werewolf. From the Greek word homo, meaning, the same and morphe, to combine forms, force a werewolf not to change. Or from the Latin homo, man, and morph,change shape, forcing a werewolf into human shape.

Hover Charm
A spell used to make something float in the air. Apparently detectable from a distance

Impedimenta
Spell used to slow down an attacker or attackers -Impedire is Latin for to hinder. it's two words in, in or into and pedis, foot combined meaning, in the way of foot (travel)

Imperio
A curse that forces you to do things against you will. One of the unforgivable curses

Imperius Curse
Imperare, is Latin for 'to command', and imperium is Latin for absolute sovereignty or surpreme control.

Imperturbable Charm
A charm that makes a room un-disturbable, imperturbable means that can not be disturbed or agitated, something that is permanently quiet, from Latin imperturbabilis, in, not perturbare, to disturb. Also the root word of perturb

Impervius
A spell used by Hermione to repel water from Harry's glasses in Prisoner of Azkaban. Impervius means incapable of being penetrated or affected.

Inanimus Conjurus
A project assigned by Professor McGonagall, I imagine this spell conjures an inanimate object. Inanimate is an object with out life, from the Latin anima life or soul, inanima, without soul. To conjure is to practice magical arts. To incant or make an invocation. From the Latin con together, and jurare to swear

Incantatem Finite
A spell to put and end to other spells or incantations. Finite is from the Latin finitus the past tense of finire, which means, to limit

Incantations
The verbal components of spells.To incant is to repeat a formula of words said or sung for the purpose of an enchantment. From the Latin incantare meaning to sing words over and over again. Jo Rowling's Incantations come in a variety of languages. Oddly, modern-language spells that contain verbs are in the imperative (the command form) but the Latin ones are in the indicative (that is, descriptive of action)

Incarcerous
A spell used by Umbridge to bind the centaur Magorian. Incarcerate means to put in prison or subject to confinement. From the Latin In, in carcer, prison

Incendio
A spell to start a fire, From the Latin Incendere, to set on fire.

Invigoration Draught
Something Harry had to make in Potions class. To invigorate means, to strengthen, or to animate, to give life to.

Invisibility Booster
Something that can make a flying car invisible, at least to Muggles. Invisibly from the latin words in, short form of the Latin prefix inter, between and visionis, sight, meaning, in the way of sight.

Invisibility Cloak
Shiny silvery grey cloth that makes everything it covers invisible though it is penetrable with any kind of magical sight. Harry's father left one to him

Jelly leg Jinx
A spell to make a persons legs uncontrollably wobbly, making it very hard to stand or walk.

Legilimency
The method of reading around in another's mind. Blockable only through Occlumency. From Latin legere, to read and mens, the mind.

Legilimens
The incantation for Legilimency; also someone who practices it.

Locomotor Mortis
Leg-locker curse Locomotion is the act of moving from place to place. From the Latin Locus, a place, and motum, to move. And mors, death. So it means the death of movement.

Love potions Gilderoy Lockhart suggested that professor Snape would willing help any second year student make love potions for a valentines day treat and Pansy Parkinson a Slytherin girl, said that although Hermione was very ugly, she was but quite brainy and up to making a Love Potion, Love Potions are, of course, banned at Hogwarts.

Mallowsweet
A herb burnt by centaur's to aid them to divine the future by examining the shape of the flames

Mandrake Restorative Draught
A potion that Gilderoy Lockhart was willing to make when he found Mrs Norris the cat petrified.

Mobiliarbus
Spell used by Hermione to move a tree in Three Broomsticks. Mobile from the Latin mobilis, to move and arbor, tree

Mobilicorpus
Spell used by Black to move Snape when he was unconscious. From the Latin mobillis, to move and corpus, the body

Morsmodre
Conjures the Dark Mark: a skull with a serpent protruding from its mouth A combination of the Latin word Mors, death and modere to bite. Therefore death eaters.

Muggle Repelling Charms
Spells that keep prying non-magical people away from large gatherings of wizards such as the Quidditch World Cup and of course Hogwarts school, where were a Muggle stumble on to it's grounds they would find a completely ruined building, with lots of danger signs all over the place, and they would suddenly remember some really important thing they just have to do, making them rush away, never knowing what they missed.

Obliviatet Memory charm used by Lockhart that backfires Oblivisci is Latin for ‘to forget’. Oblivious can mean lacking all memory.

Obliviator Member of the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad a person who modifies the memory of Muggle who witness magic they shouldn't have

Obliteration charm A charm to make something vanish. From the Latin word oblitterare, from ob over, and littera a letter, it means to blot out

Occlumency
The method of blocking Legilimency. From Latin occludere, to be in the way of, to shut, and mens the mind.

Orchideous Spell to create a bunch of flowers at the wand tip. Orchid is the common name for a family comprising one of the largest groups of flowering plants.

Ornithomancy
A form of divination taught in 5th year the divinatory practice of foretelling the future through the flight paths of birds. The root of this word is from the Greek word Ornis, a bird, and the word mantria, divination.
