Summoning charm - Latin for to summon.

lohomora
A charm used to unlock doors a combination of Aloha Hawaiian for both Hello and Goodbye and the Latin word mora meaning obstacle.

Anti-Cheating Charms
Probably the same as the Anti-Cheating Spell used on the O.W.L. exam papers.

Anti-Cheating Spell
Used on the quills the Hogwarts student use for their written exams.

Anti-Disapparation Jinx
A spell that disables the target's ability to disapparate.

Aparecium
A spell used to make invisible ink visible; Apparere is Latin for to become visible. It is two words really. ad towards, parere come forth, (see entry on Latin for explanation on Latin prefixes and compound verbs)

Apparate
Magical ability to disappear and reappear at any location, Apparere is Latin for to become visible. It is two words really.ad towards, parere come forth

Avada Kedavra,
A Killing Curse. One of the unforgivable curses, Aramaic phrase that means "may it be destroyed".

Avis
A Spell used by Mr. Ollivander to make birds fly out of Krum's wand, Avis is Latin for bird.

Babbling Beverage
A potion that makes the recipient spout nonsense. To babble is to talk like a baby, or talk foolishly, or to tell secrets, Beverage is is an liquid for drinking, from the Latin word bibere to drink, and the root of the French word breuvage

Babbling Curse
Gilderoy Lockhart claimed to have cured a Transylvanian villager of it.

Bat-Bogey Hex
A spell that summons winged imps of some sort to harass the target. A specialty of Ginny Weasley's.

Befuddlement Draught
A potion that creates hot-headedness or recklessness. To Fuddle is to stupefy with drink, to drink to excess or habitually, to confuse. Befuddle is to reduce some one to a fuddled state.

Blood-Replenishing Potion
Arthur Weasley had to take this hourly after being attacked by a huge snake at the ministry

Bluebell fire
A magically conjured blue fire that can be carried. Hermione kept a jar full in her pockets and used it to help stay warm when she watched Harry play Quidditch, and against the Devils snare plant.

Body-Bind
A curse that paralyses the target completely. Incantation Petrificatus totalus.

Bubblehead charm
Useful for breathing under water, and also for areas where hundreds of Dungbombs have been set off as it ensured the wearer a supply of fresh air, even though it gave them all the peculiar appearance of wearing upside-down goldfish bowls on their heads

Bulbadox powder
Substances that will make you come out in boils

Calming Draught
A soothing potion.

Charm
Magical spell that adds properties to something causing it to change, taught by Professor Flitwick, Hermione managed to pass her first year charms exam with one hundred and twelve percent

Colloportus
Spell used by Hermione to seal a door From the Latin word colligo, to bind, portus, means gate.

Confundus
A charm to bewitch a subject into believing what they are told, probably from the Latin word confabulari, which is to make up or imagine things to compensate for loss of memory

Confusing Concoction
A type of potion Harry had to make for his final exam in his third year.

Confusing Draught
Probably the same thing as the Confusing Concoction.

Conjunctivitis Curse
A spell that injures the eyes of the victim (Krum used this on the Chinese Fireball, Sirius suggested this for the Horntail) Conjunctivitis is the scientific name for pinkeye the inflammation of a mucous membrane lining the inner surface of the eye socket.

Does what it says on the box.

Colour Change charm
A charm that changes an objects colour, Harry mixed up this charm in his O.W.L.s exam with a Growth Charms and the rat he was supposed to be turning orange swelled shockingly and was the size of a badger before Harry could rectify his mistake

Counterjinx
Term for any spell when it is used in opposition to a curse.

Cruciatus curse
The victim experiences extreme pain. One of the unforgivable curses used in torture can drive a person insane, Latin root is crudelis. Cruciatus meaning torture or bloodthirsty

Crucio
The incantation used in the Cruciatus curse. Latin for I torture, or I grieve

Curse of the Bogies
A curse Professor Quirrell told his students about. Bogies are mischievous but harmless spirits who live in cellars barns attics cupboards hollow trees and caves. Although they try to move with attempted stealth their clumsiness betrays their presence with thumps creaks and scuffles. They amuse themselves by hovering behind a person's back and thus creating a vague uneasiness pulling blankets on cold nights and other uncreative mischief. Also they like to spy on people and listen to their conversations. However Bogies is also British slang for nasal mucus.

Deflation Draft
Counteracts the Engorgement Charm, Deflate is the opposite of inflate. Flare in Latin means to blow.

Deletrius
A banishing spell used to clear the results of the Prior Incantato spell - delere is Latin for 'to erase' deletum is to blot out.

Densaugeo
A curse to make the front teeth grow Dens is Latin for teeth. Augeo is Latin for 'to augment.'

Diffindo
A spell to make things split or tear- In Latin 'Diffundo' means scatter or pour forth.

Disapparation
A method of travel for experienced wizards, which involves disappearing from one place and reappearing in another, Latin dis to split asunder or reversal, ad (ap) meaning, to and paritum, come forth.

Disillusionment Charm
A simple charm to make you blend into the background like a human chameleon.

Dissendium
A spell to open the one-eyed crone's hump in one of the passages to Hogsmeade, it might come from dissect which means to cut open. Or from descend, to go down.

Draught of Living Death
A powerful sleeping potion made of asphodel and wormwood. Asphodel - common name applied to certain flowering plants native mostly to the Mediterranean region. In Greek mythology there is an area in Hades, the underworld, called the field of Asphodel. Wormwood (Artermisia absinthium) - common name for a perennial herb or shrubby plant of the family of composite flowers. The leaves and flowers contain terpene thujone, an aromatic bitter toxic substance used in the popular French drink Absinthe. First discovered by a Dr Pierre Ordinaire, but later produced on a large scale by Henri-Louis Pernod.

A calming potion.
