Sorted into an unknown house. Morag from Gaelic, a diminutive of mor'a, meaning the sun, MacDougal from the Gaelic for Dark stranger.

Mackled Malaclaw
A bad luck-bringing lobster-like creature Mackled means blurred. Malaclaw, comes from Mal or bad, and claw. Therefore a creature whose claws bring bad luck.

Macnair, Walden
The executioner for the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous creatures. He is now known to be a Death Eater. And was part of the team Malfoy took with him to attack Harry Potter and his friends whom they had lured to the Ministry of Magic. Anglicisation of Mac an Mhaoir, son of the steward, keeper. The principal Irish family of this name held the hereditary post of Keeper of the Book of Armagh at Ballymoyer (Gaelic Baile an Mhaoir) Walden: (English) Wooded valley.

A centaur living in the Forbidden Forest. The meaning of his name, is either "Fear from every side". Taken from a symbolic name for the Priest- Prophet Pashue mentioned in the bible, or from the legendary name given to the mythical ancestors of the Hungarian Nation

A tropical hardwood (swietenia mahogoni) from several trees of the family Meliaceae, most often the West Indies mahogany, used mainly in furniture and panelling.

Malfoy, Abraxas
Lucius Malfoy's father, known to Slughorn. Died of the Dragon Pox. Abraxas was a leader or ruler with a somewhat Chimera-like appearance, resembling a basilisk: he had the head of a rooster or sometimes a king, the body of a man, and legs fashioned like snakes and sometimes depicted with a whip in his hand - a form referred to as the Anguipede. There are references to Abraxas in several Gnostic writings Abrasax is the name given by the Gnostics to the Supreme Deity.

Malfoy Draco
Birthday: 5 June
Only child of Lucius and Narcissa, A Slytherin rival of Harry Ron and Hermione. Draco means dragon in Latin. Also Draco was the name of a cruel Athenian lawmaker. His harsh legal code punished both trivial and serious crimes with death. From this we get our expression draconian laws meaning unnecessarily harsh laws.

Malfoy Lucius
Draco Malfoy's father. Death eater. The name Lucius might be a nod to Lucifer the devil. More likely however is the connection with Saint Lucius who succeeded Saint Cornelius as pope. Another interesting connection is that both Draco and Lucius (another Lucius not the pope!) were overly harsh Roman lawmakers.

Malfoy Narcissa
Self-absorbed mother of Draco Malfoy. Narcissus was the son of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Liriope. Tiresias the seer told his parents that the child would live to an old age if he did not look at itself. Many nymphs and girls fell in love with him but he rejected them. The goddess Nemesis heard the rejected girls prayers for vengeance and arranged for Narcissus to fall in love with his own reflection. He stayed watching his reflection and let himself die. This gives the origin of the narcissus flower, which grew where he died.

Mallowsweet
A herb most likely to be Abutilon indicum or the sweet Mallow (monkeybush). Used by herbalist to help to treat dysentery and as a poultice for cleaning wounds.The herb is burnt by centaurs to aid them to divine the future by examining the shape of the flames

Mandrake Restorative Draught
A potion that Gilderoy Lockhart was willing to make when he found Mrs Norris the cat petrified. Mandrake Restorative used to return people who have been transfigured or cursed back to their original state. Regarded as a plant with special powers because the root roughly resembles the human figure. It was supposed to grow under the feet of a hanged man and could only be pulled from the ground after performing the necessary rituals. It was advisable to put wax in the ears before one attempted to do this: the mandrake would scream when pulled free and this could cause deafness. The mandrake root was used for invulnerability, a love potion, for discovering treasures, and as a charm for pregnancy.

Manky or Mouldy old boot

Manticore
A Greek beast with the head of a man the body of a lion and the tail of a scorpion. The Manticore is a monstrous creature that inhabits the forests in Asia especially in Indonesia Malaysia and India. The manticore considered to be the most dangerous predator in these regions has the body of a lion and a head with human resemblance. The mouth is filled with three rows of razor-sharp teeth and the scaled tail ends in a ball with poisonous darts. The monster stalks through the forest in search of humans. Upon an encounter with a human the manticore fires a volley of darts at the victim who dies immediately. This unfortunate person is devoured completely even the bones and clothing as well as the possessions this person carried vanish. When a villager has completely disappeared this is considered proof of the presence of a manticore. (Encyclopaedia Mythica)

Marauders
The rather romantic name used by what sounds like a small group of bullies. Going by the names of Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs To 'maraud' means to make a plundering raid, pilfer systematically, or to plunder a place. A Marauder was a rogue.

Marauders Map
A secret map given to Harry by the twins, Fred and George Weasley, that shows all the passageways at Hogwarts, created by Messrs. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs, which show all of Hogwarts, the locations of all people therein, and instructions for opening the various secret passages out of the school. Harry managed to recover the map from Mad eye Moody's office, after the events told in the fourth book Goblet of Fire .

The head of the Wizarding Examinations Authority, and an elder of the Wizengamot until resigning in protest at the introduction of the High Inquisitor.

Mars
The Red planet and the name of the Roman god of war, Mars is often associated with conflict and death in astrology. Hagrid met the centaurs in the Forbidden forest in book one they commented that Mars looked unusually bright, Jo Rowling missed the date by a few years as it was not until August 2003 that Mars passed closest to the Earth it will not pass as close as that again for another sixty three thousand years

A rich builder and wife who come to a dinner party at the Dursley's on Harry's twelfth birthday. Vernon Dursley wass hoping to secure a large order from them, he failed to take into account Mrs Mason a terrific fear of owls

Marsh Madam
A witch who lives in Wales and uses the Knight bus to travel, a lot.

Maxime Madame Olympia
Half-giant headmistress at Beauxbatons. Olympian can mean surpassing all others in scope. Mount Olympus is the largest mountain in Greece and supposedly the home of the gods. Maxime is Latin for greatest. There's also a bilingual pun in her name. Maxime is French for principle and Madame Maxime is the principal of Beauxbatons. Hagrid mispronounces her name, as he does with most words, calling her ‘Olympe’

McDonald Natalie
A student sorted into Gryffindor in Goblet of Fire: From Latin natale (domini), i.e. Christmas Day. Natalie was a 9-year-old Harry Potter fan diagnosed with a fatal case of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Her Mother knew she wouldn't live to see book 4 so she wrote to Jo Rowling and asked her to tell her what would happen in the next four books. Jo responded with a very lengthy letter but it arrived two days after Natalie died. Natalie now lives on immortalized as a student brave enough to be sorted into Gryffindor.

McGonagall Minerva
A strict leader of Gryffindor house Professor of Transfiguration at Hogwarts and at seventy years of age she is quite young to be the assistant Headmistress. She is also an Animagus, of the cat variety. Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom, medicine, the arts, dyeing, science, and trade and war. As Minerva Medica she is the patroness of physicians. Minerva is believed to be the inventor of numbers and musical instruments. She was equated with the Greek Athena. (From Encyclopaedia Mythica)
