A slightly demented knight that inhabits a painting on the landing of the seventh floor in Hogwarts. Temporary guardian of Gryffindor Tower in Book Three. He rode a fat pony. Cadogan Anglicised form of CADWGAWN Means "glory in battle" from Welsh cad "battle" and gwogawn "glory, honour". In the Mabinogion, a collection of tales from Welsh myth, this name is briefly mentioned as the son of Iddon

A Chaser for Hufflepuff.

One of the passwords to the Gryffindor common room Caput meaning head. Draco the Latin word for dragon. Together head of the dragon, it can also mean entrance.

Carmichael, Eddie
A Ravenclaw, one year ahead of Harry. Carmichael meaning the castle or stronghold of Michael, from caer, a castle or fortified place

Carrow, Alecto
A Death Eater involved in the battle at Hogwarts and possibly now captured. The last name of two or possibly more Death Eaters might be related to Alecto and Amycus who remained free after Voldemort's fall. In Greek mythology, the Erinyes or Eumenides (the Romans called them the Furies) were female personifications of vengeance. Their number is usually left indeterminate, though Virgil recognized three: Alecto "unceasing", Megaera "grudging", and Tisiphone "avenging murder". Carrow is derived from Welsh surname Caeriw, meaning dweller at the fort on the hill. It is also an obsolete word, meaning iterant gambler

Cauldwell Owen
Sorted in to Hufflepuff. Cauldwell is a type of well made by damming a small stream with a weir or cauld (from an old Scottish term) it is also an English noun meaning a weir feeding a mill race or lead. Owen is gaelic meaning wellborn offspring (from uan meaning lamb)

Cecilia
Tom Riddle senior's girlfriend, until he was stolen away by Merope Gaunt.
Saint Cecilia wowed her virginity to God; her parents forced her to marry Valerian of Trastevere. Cecilia told her new husband that an angel accompanied her, but in order to see it, he must be purified. He agreed to the purification, and was baptised; returning from the ceremony, he found her in prayer accompanied by a praying angel. The angel placed a crown on each of their heads, and offered Valerian a favour; the new convert asked that his brother be baptised. The two brothers developed a ministry of giving proper burial to martyred Christians. In their turn they were arrested and martyred for their faith. Cecilia buried them at her villa on the Apprian Way, and was arrested for the action. She was ordered to sacrifice to false gods; when she refused, she was martyred in her turn. It is also the name of a song by Simon & Garfunkel

Centaur
A mythical creature that is half-horse and half-man. It has the body and legs of a horse but the arms and face of a man, race of monsters believed to have inhabited the mountain regions of Thessaly and Arcadia. They were represented as human down to the waist with the lower torso and legs of a horse. They were the followers of the wine god Dionysus and are well known for drunkenness and carrying off helpless young maidens. Historically Centaurs are portrayed as wise, stargazers and fortunetellers

A secret lair at Hogwarts that Salazar Slytherin built after he lost his battle with Godric Gryffindor said to be the home of the most terrible monster

claims to have stumbled into a hidden room filled with chamberpots one night when he was heading for the bathroom. This was, we know now, the Room of Requirement

Chambers
A Chaser on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team.

Chameleon Ghoul
Mentioned in passing, a type of ghoul with a natural ability to disguise itself. This is not relevant really, but the Latin word chamaeleon means dwarf lion.

Chang Cho
Ravenclaw seeker. She was shorter than Harry by about a head, and extremely pretty with long, shiny black hair Harry has a rather large crush on her. Former girlfriend to Cedric Diggory. Cho is Japanese for very extremely. Chang when used as a first name can signify a person that is quick thinking and to the point. Therefore Cho Chang is very quick thinking quite appropriate for a Ravenclaw. Additionally Cho Cho is Japanese for butterfly. Cho is also a Korean girls name meaning lovely, pretty.

Chocolate
A treat made from the ground seeds of the Theobroma cacao (cocoa) bean mixed with sugar and flour. Counteracts depression from Dementors Seriously chocolate is known to cause a slight increase in endorphins -- brain chemicals that give some sense of pleasure and well-being and also some suppression of pain. Since the effect of Dementor gaze is in essence identical to major depression anything that enhances a state of well being helps recovery.

A type of chocolate cake filled with cream and decorated with flavoured icing served at Hogwarts

Chorley, Herbert
Junior Minster to the British prime Minister. After what appears to be a bad reaction to a poorly enacted Imperious Curse he began to impersonate a Duck. The new minister of magic eventually had him removed from the tender care of his family and hospitalised at the wizarding Hospital of St Mungo. Where he attempted to strangle several healers.

Christmas pudding
A rich fruit pudding, normally baked months in advance and regularly wetted down with a strong alcoholic drink, it heavily soaked with warmed brandy and set alight just before serving. Hiding a silver coin in it is also traditional much to the delight of dentists everywhere.

Chudley Cannons
The professional Quidditch team Ron admires, they wear bright orange and black robes and the last time we heard anyting about them they were ninth in the league
